Day Two of our Tour with "Scarlet" by Stephen Lawhead

An author always takes a risk when he or she tinkers with a beloved story. Sometimes, the tinkering is merely a spoof, such as Rene Gutteridge's novel, "Boo Humbug".

Other times, an author takes a little known character from a well known story and tells it from that perspective, like "The Shepherd's Prayer" by Richard M. Barry. That gives a fresh glimpse at a familiar tale that brings a deeper meaning to the reader.

But Stephen Lawhead has taken an even greater risk with "The King Raven" series. He has taken a very familiar story and transported it to an entirely different land, with different events and some new characters, as well as eliminating traditional landmarks such as Sherwood Forest and the evil Sheriff of Nottingham.

Still, he leaves enough of the familiar to cause the reader to say, "Oh, hey, it's Friar Tuck!" or "So THAT'S Little John!" And there is something special that happens when we stumble over old friends in such a new environment.

"Hood" laid the groundwork for this new re-telling of an old legend...and "Scarlet" (re)introduces us to another beloved character, Will Scarlet, and carries the legend into deeper and richer legend.

Want to read my thoughts on "Scarlet"? Well, you'll just have to wait until tomorrow, when we wrap up our tour with The King Raven Trilogy! Til then, take a peek at my blogger buddies joining us on tour:

Nice little teaser! But I agree that Lawhead took a risk. From what I've read, reviews of Hood weren't so kind. I thought he pulled it off masterfully in Scarlet.

As they say, it's always better in the re-telling! Love what Lawhead did. Thanks for the teaser!
