The Choosing by Rachelle Dekker

About the Book:

Like all citizens since the Ruining, Carrington Hale knows the importance of this day. But she never expected the moment she’d spent a lifetime preparing for—her Choosing ceremony—to end in disaster. Ripped from her family, she’ll spend her days serving as a Lint, the lowest level of society. She knows it’s her duty to follow the true way of the Authority.

But as Carrington begins this nightmare, rumors of rebellion rattle her beliefs. Though the whispers contradict everything she’s been told, they resonate deep within.

Then Carrington is offered an unprecedented chance at the life she’s always dreamed of, yet she can’t shake the feeling that it may be an illusion. With a killer targeting Lints and corruption threatening the highest levels of the Authority, Carrington must uncover the truth before it destroys her.

My Thoughts:

I'm about to make a big, bold statement...one I've never made in the history of this blog.  But I mean every word, and I'll stake my reputation as a book reviewer on this one thing:

With "The Choosing", Rachelle Dekker is going to open the floodgates of quality inspirational Young Adult fiction in the same way Frank Peretti paved the way with "This Present Darkness."

Yeah, I know!  That was HUGE, and think of all the great authors we have because of the bravery of that one author!  Well, guess what?  It's about to happen again...I guarantee it!

From the choice of character names (Carrington, Larkin, Helms, Remko, Vena and Neely) to the classification of the different people (Authority, Lint, CityWatch), each piece of world-building is meticulously placed, creating a very believable and very chilling Year 2257.

Rachelle effortlessly weaves the history of this new world, informing the reader of the changes, what caused them and who instituted said changes.  Prepare to lose yourself in the world of the Lints vs. The Authority, and to feel emotions you didn't even realize you were capable of feeling.

Myself, I felt unworthiness, loneliness, and hopelessness.  Rachelle Dekker takes from today's glitz and glamour society fixation and spins a remarkable tale of what it is like when all a young girl lives for is to be chosen.

And when she isn't, the devastation and rejection from society that we tend to imagine becomes all too real.  Throw in a mystery and a possible serial killer, mix in a charismatic speaker who has developed a following of believers willing to do anything to follow his teaching and overthrow the Authority...

And you have a YA novel destined to change the world.  Yes, Rachelle Dekker is the oldest daughter of Ted Dekker, but she stands on her own talented merit as a stellar debut novelist.  I'm eager to see where she takes this series!

My thanks to my friends at Tyndale Publishing for my complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.  "The Choosing" does not disappoint, and it is highly recommended!

Happy Reading!
