Critical Pursuit by Janice Cantore

About the Book:

Officer Brinna Caruso has built a reputation at the precinct as the cop to call when a child goes missing. For Brinna, it’s personal because she was once one of them. Brinna and her K-9 search and rescue dog, Hero, will stop at nothing to find a missing child, no matter the stakes.

Detective Jack O’Reilly isn’t ready to return to his homicide duties after losing his wife to a drunk driver. He’s on the downside of his career, and bent on revenge, when he’s assigned as Brinna’s partner. While on patrol, Jack struggles between his quest for personal justice and his responsibility to those around him, especially his partner.

Skeptical of Jack’s motives, Brinna isn’t sure she can rely on her new partner, whose reckless abandon endangers those around him. But when a man surfaces with an MO similar to the criminal who abducted Brinna twenty years earlier, Brinna and Jack must cast aside previous judgments and combine efforts to catch the kidnapper and finally allow Brinna the peace stolen from her as a child.

My Thoughts:

Janice Cantore has taken her many years of experience in law enforcement to good use in her fiction.  Her stories read like episodes of Law and Order meets Criminal Minds--without the graphic detail!  Brinna has heart, but lacks direction.  She's held captive by her past and rejected the God who loves her.

Jack O'Reilly is floundering after the loss of his wife.  He has nothing to anchor his life to, and when he partners up with Brinna life gets explosive, both literally and figuratively.  Can these two work out their differences in order to save lives and catch criminals?

While "Critical Pursuit" doesn't read as smoothly as her previous books, I still enjoyed the book very much.  The relationship between Brinna and her co-workers feel a bit stiff, but I attribute that to the trauma from her past.  Here's hoping the next novel gets even better.

My thanks to my friends at Tyndale Publishing for my advance copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.  "Critical Pursuit" will be a good summer read.

Happy Reading!
