Unholy Hunger by Heather James

About the Book:

Evelyn Barrett wants to die. As long as her daughter's murderer dies with her, she is ready to go. Why did this man--this stranger--destroy her family? Why has he not been brought to justice? Why is she forced to live a life of anger and grief?

Amid a million questions she cannot answer, Evelyn knows one thing for sure: this murderer must be punished for his crime. Perhaps the harder lesson is this: the ultimate truth--of crime and verdict, of life and death--cannot be swayed by a mother's revenge.

In this first book of a new, page-turning series, a woman will be brought to her limits before she finally recognizes and reconnects with the source of true peace.

My Thoughts:

I almost passed this book up.  The back cover copy just didn't entice me, but the front cover kept tugging at me.  A friend read it and recommended it, so I took a chance and picked it up.

Wow.  This is a first novel??  A debut from a new author??  Could have fooled me!  Heather James writes with experience and authentic voice behind every word.  She is unique, using dark humor and wit to defuse a very tender and heart rending topic...and it works.

Evelyn is a woman after your own heart.  When she loses her only child in a hideous crime, she is a woman bent on vengeance.  Right or wrong, her desire to catch the criminal appeals to something deep within us.

Evelyn also demonstrates how destructive it is to unleash that something that lies deep within us.  Her journey is a vivid lesson in allowing God to take control rather than wrestling control from Him.

Eddie...well, I wasn't sure how I felt about him for a long time.  By the final pages I think I was beginning to respect him, if not like him as a character.  He definitely will draw emotions out of you.  Eddie is written very well.

As are the detectives on the case and the suspects.  The story moves along at a quick pace: be warned...there is no good page to pause on for the night.  Yup, this is an all-nighter novel!

Heather James has set the bar high for her next novel, but "Unholy Hunger" was such a surprise and so engaging, I'm confident that the second book in the "Lure of the Serpent" will be equally engaging.

I received a copy of "Unholy Hunger" from Kregel Publishing in exchange for an honest review.  It's a bit odd saying this, considering the subject matter of the story, but this book is highly recommended.

Happy Reading!
