Karen Kingsbury isn't the only author who makes her readers cry! Deborah Raney is on my top contemporary fiction must read list, and her newest novel proves why she deserves to be there.
"Forever After" continues the 'Hanover Falls' series, continuing the aftermath and recovery from a devastating fire. Lucas Vermontez continued the family tradition of serving and protecting, but he lost far more than the use of his legs in the homeless shelter fire.
Jenna Morgan is stuck in her grieving. Some hard self-examination has her questioning: did she truly love her husband, or was he merely a convenient escape from her nightmarish life? When Jenna slowly loses everything that mattered to her, what will she discover about her true self?
Both Lucas and Jenna struggle to let go of the past and to embrace the future. Is their future filled with hope and promise, or discouragement and despair? Are they meant to be? If so, can they overcome obstacles to develop their fledgling relationship, or will they continue to repeat the mistakes of the past?
I adored Lucas' family, and came to appreciate Jenna's struggle for meaning and worth. Deborah creates flawed characters that are rich and detailed, drawing readers into the story until the final page turns.
And even though I vow "I'm not gonna cry this time"....I always do! Reading Deborah's books is like being interviewed by Barbara Walters...it's going to happen, so just go with it!
My thanks to my friends at Howard/Simon & Schuster (they do such GREAT covers for her books!) for my copy. "Forever After" receives five out of five bookmarks, with a Dalmatian as a charm.
Happy Reading!
