First Things First by Kurt and Brenda Warner

As embarrassed as I am to admit this, I'm not a football fan until the playoffs! Maybe it's my short attention span or something...I don't know. But even I know who Kurt Warner is, and he's been a favorite of mine for a long time.

His book, written with his wife, is about much more than just football. "First Things First" does share a bit about Kurt's football career, as well as some background on how he met and married Brenda. Did you know she's a former Marine? Wow.

This is a book about parenting; specifically, how the Warner's parent their large family...seven kids in all. But even that doesn't truly capture the message in the book.

Basically, it's all about the Warners...what they've learned, experienced, and are continuing to learn as people, as believers, as husband and wife, and as parents. It's honest...just read the forward written by oldest daughter Jenni!

I loved the book for a variety of reasons. "First Things First" is definitely co-written by both Kurt and Brenda. They take turns in each chapter sharing on the topic at hand, and both do so from their point of view and in their own voice--unlike some parenting books written by 'parents'.

The Warners are honest as well. No flaws are hidden under a mask of perfection. If they blew it, they share how they blew it. And they make sure we know they don't think they are perfect parents or spouses. We're all on this journey together: they just got to write a book about their portion of it!

But the genuine voice that rings out from both Kurt and Brenda is what captured me. The book is very informal, very conversational. Very friendly. I liked that. I love knowing that I have brothers and sisters in the public eye that aren't captured by their fame or fortune.

Basically, you'll meet two people who believe in giving back far more than they've received, and who are committed to teaching that to their children!

How cool is THAT?

The Warners are regular people who have a huge football factor in their family. Even still, Kurt has to pay his son to play with him! How average is that? Whether you're a football fan or not, I truly believe you'll enjoy this book!

That's why I'm giving "First Things First" five out of five bookmarks with a goal post as a charm. Not just for the football, but for the goal we all have as parents, believers, and people. Thanks to Todd at Tyndale for my copy!

Happy Reading!
