After sampling this one, I realized I should have started the 25 Reviews with it...but it's never too late...
I've talked with a lot of people this year, and most agree that it just doesn't feel like Christmas. I think the reason we feel this way is covered quite well in Ace Collins' new book, "25 Days, 26 Ways". After reading this little book, I think it may be the best Christmas ever after all!
For instance, did you know that the shopping season used to begin just days before Christmas? Most of the wrapping, decorating and busy lifestyle didn't start until around a week before the holiday.
That left lots of time to focus on the true meaning of the season. But during World War II, the president urged citizens to shop early so packages could arrive on time. And that kept on for several years, until the shopping season finally began after Thanksgiving.
Christmas programs, nativities, advent, candlelight services...many of these traditions have disappeared, or been lost in the shuffle. No wonder it doesn't feel like Christmas! We have so many holidays for gifts and shopping and decorating, what's one more??
But Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and died a horrific death for you and for me...and we celebrate his birth this time of year. Do we truly remenber that? Or are we so busy searching for the perfect gift for the relative we rarely see or spend time with that we leave Christ in the manger?
Read Ace's book. Re-focus your holiday. Get Christ back in Christmas, and celebrate the gift of His love and His sacrifice all year long. Maybe next year this time, it WILL feel like Christmas...just as it should!
I'm giving "25 Days, 26 Ways" four out of five bookmarks, with a candy cane as a charm. I may repost this one early next year, to remind us all what Christmas is truly all about.
Happy Reading!
