Looking For Salvation at the Dairy Queen by Susan Gregg Gilmore

Remember when I told you I read a smattering of general market fiction? One reason I don't read much of it is because of the 'ick' factor...excessive language and sexual content. I'm a visual reader, and I just prefer not to have that in my mind's eye.

So when I find a book to love that I can recommend, I'm thrilled. Somehow I stumbled upon a delightful Southern novel, "Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen" by Susan Gregg Gilmore and decided to take a chance.

I'm so glad I did!

Catherine Grace Cline has lived her entire life in a tiny town of less than two thousand in population, depending on who's coming and who's going. After losing her mother at the young age of six, it's been in her heart and head to get out of Ringgold, Georgia as soon as humanly possible.

But her life adventures along the way make for some entertaining reading! Her relationship with her sister, Martha Ann, is a close one, but not without its differences. And her daddy is her hero, even if he does make her dress up for Sunday service and seem to be just waiting to pounce on her unsaved soul.

Growing up without a Momma is hard on a young girl, but Catherine has plenty of women in her life to help with the trials of growing up female--some wanted and some she would rather mind to their own business.

And, as is always in a small, southern town...it's hard to keep things quiet. But when Catherine finally has the chance to pack her blue Samsonite luggage and escape her destiny of growing her own tomatoes, she heads off to the big city of Atlanta to make something of herself.

It's when tragedy strikes at home that Catherine Grace Cline discovers why she was put on God's earth, and that He was truly listening to her all along. In the writing style of Fannie Flagg and with the heart of "Steel Magnolias", Susan Gregg Gilmore's debut makes me hope she has more to say.

Some mild language is included in the book, but nothing I think will curl your hair. And the message of the book is so worth the reading, I believe you'll enjoy it as I have.

So, I'm giving "Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen" four out of five bookmarks with a hand-dipped Dilly Bar...with the perfect curlicue on it! Makes me hungry for one right now!

I'm glad you posted about this book, Deena, otherwise I would probably never have noticed it. I love southern fiction (I live in Georgia), appreciated your review, and am definitely going to read it.
