As I've stated many times, I'm not a fan of historical novels. But I know many of you are, and I'm excited to introduce you to a new author I've gotten acquainted with. "A Mending At The Edge" concludes a trilogy that is both lyric and full of rich detail and Biblical truth.
Jane Kirkpatrick is a best-selling historical novelist, and I can see why! She wields her pen like a paint brush, creating word pictures that feed the mind and inspire your heart. She is a gifted writer, able to put you "there" in her novels.
Oregon is territory Jane knows very well. She and her husband ranch 160 acres in eastern Oregon. Her familiarity with the land comes through in her writing, so that you can see the fingers of the bare branches reaching toward the gray sky, and you can feel the rain as it beats down on those working to establish a home in the Oregon Territory.
Based in historical fact, Jane takes what she's gleaned from her research and has crafted a trilogy of novels about Emma Wagner Giesy. Emma is an independent thinker that is constantly pushing the boundaries laid out by her restrictive religious upbringing.
A part of the German heritage, Emma struggles to keep her family together and to find hope in the direst of circumstances. In this final chapter, Emma's abusive husband has returned. How can she protect her children from him in an environment that welcomes him back?
Coupled with that is the illness that claims lives as they battle against it, the prejudice that they encounter both within and without the community, and the struggle to create a communal society with all of the control and suppression of freedoms...especially those of women.
The next time you think you're oppressed as a woman, pick up Jane's book and you'll realize just how much freedom we've gained, not only in our country, but in the church as well.
Rich in culture and history, the depth of the spiritual message will resound in your heart. You won't have to be a woman of the 1850's to appreciate the message of hope and the words of encouragement found in these pages.
For fans of historical fiction, this is a series you won't want to miss. SO, I'm giving away the ENTIRE SERIES to one of my readers!! just leave me a comment and I'll draw a winning name on May 1st!!
Happy Reading!
