Last Chance Hero by Cathleen Armstrong
About the Book:
The inhabitants of Last Chance, New Mexico, could not be more pleased. Dr. Jessica McLeod has opened an office right on Main Street. Andy Ryan, the best athlete the little town ever produced, has ended his short career in the NFL and has come home to coach the mighty Pumas of Last Chance High.
Unfortunately, Dr. Jess immediately gets off on the wrong foot when she admits that she's never seen a football game, isn't really interested in doing so, and, in fact, doesn't know a first down from a home run. Meanwhile, Coach Ryan is discovering that it's not easy to balance atop the pedestal the town has put him on.
When this unlikely pair is drawn together over the future of a young player--whose gifts may lie in the laboratory rather than on the football field--they begin to wonder if they might have a future together as well.
With the flair that has made her Last Chance books a favorite among readers of contemporary fiction, Cathleen Armstrong draws on the passion Americans have for the traditions of small-town high school football.
My Thoughts:
Note to self: do NOT start reading a book by Cathleen Armstrong just before you want to go to sleep. You'll be up pretty much all night, playing the just-one-more-chapter game until your eyes can no longer focus.
Last Chance is a tiny, one horse town, but an awful lot of drama takes place for just a handful of citizens! In this book, we are introduced to Andy Ryan, football hero and returning coach, and witness how the glory days can easily become a nightmare for this former legend.
Plus, Last Chance will finally have its own doctor...if the patients can stop going into San Ramon for medical treatment. Dr. Jess deals with the prejudice of the establishment versus new medicine, and when she butts heads with Andy over the football team, will things go from worse to...even worse?
Favorite characters return, and we get to see how their lives have progressed. It truly is like a trip back to a familiar home town, and I enjoy every moment I get to spend in Last Chance. My thanks to my friends at Revell Publishing for my complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
Check out "Last Chance Hero" and you'll be glad you did! And get copies of Cathleen's previous Last Chance novels while you're at it!
Happy Reading!
