Placebo by Steven James

From the Back of the Book:

While covertly investigating a controversial neurological research program, exposé filmmaker Jevin Banks is drawn into a far-reaching conspiracy involving one of the world's largest pharmaceutical firms. After giving up his career as an escape artist and illusionist in the wake of his wife and sons' tragic death, Jevin is seeking not only answers about the questionable mind-to-mind communication program, but also answers to why his family suffered as they did.

Rooted in ground-breaking science and inspired by actual research, Placebo explores the far reaches of science, consciousness, and faith. Readers will love this taut, intelligent, and emotionally gripping new thriller from master storyteller Steven James.

My Thoughts:

A word of caution: do NOT pick this up before bed, unless you want bleary eyes the next morning!  Steven James is crafted another thrill-a-minute series, and he kicks it off in high gear with "Placebo".

Jevin Banks is nothing like our previous hero, Patrick Bowers.  Jevin is out to prove a con is a con is a con, by filming controversial things and either proving or debunking them.  But when Jevin sets out to investigate a neurological research program, he gets far more than he bargained for.

Steven has created more likeable and sympathetic characters, and his story is still engaging and even thrilling at times.  But I must admit, I prefer Patrick to Jevin, and that's like saying I'd rather have a good steak than a good burger--both satisfy, just on different levels.

Xavier and Fionna are my favorite new sidekicks, and I sense something brewing there...of course, Fionna comes as a packaged set (read the book and you'll get it!).  Charlene is the only character I felt little for...she's just not fleshed out enough for me, I guess.

I'm hooked and eagerly waiting for the second in this series, as well as Patrick Bower's supposed final case, both coming some time next year.  I received a copy of "Placebo" from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly??  Highly recommended...just not quite as highly as I recommend Steven James' other series...the Patrick Bowers Files:-)

Happy Reading!
