NIghtshade by Ronie Kendig

I LOVE a good military suspense novel, and I fell for Ronie Kendig's writing style in her last story, "Dead Reckoning". When I heard she was creating a four book series, I could barely stand the wait!

From the cover art to the concept to the story, everything was just as I'd anticipated. And her idea to write a series about our "Discarded Heroes" is just brilliant. It's about time we all woke up and realized what service to our country really costs.

In "Nightshade", Max Jacobs has returned home a changed man. So changed, his marriage may be over. Trouble is, he's still deeply in love with his estranged wife, Sydney. So why can't they just settle their issues and put their lives back together?

Could it be because Sydney has had to get a restraining order against Max, fearful that he could hurt her...again? And why won't Max get help for his PTSD?

When a mysterious man approaches Max for an elite and deeply covert group of discarded veterans with top-notch skills, what is there to hold him back? Thus, the black-ops group 'Nightshade' is born.

No one knows of their existence save themselves and their creator...and one person from Capital Hill. Every operation is clandestine and dangerous, and they are just the men for the job.

But when word gets out about a group that slips in and slips out in dead of night, helping where no one else can help...will their cover be blown? A missionary family finds themselves stranded in the middle of a war zone...a job for "Nightshade".

Can they all make it out...and avoid the reporter hot on their heels for the story of her career? Will this elite group find their purpose again in helping the helpless? And can Max ever make peace with his time in war?

Ronie has not only crafted an excellent read, she's put the spotlight on a little understood topic and given the men and women who return home from battle flesh and blood through her characters.

When we read Max's story, we must ask ourselves two questions: just how grateful are we for the men and women who serve, and just how often do we express that gratitude to them when we encounter them?

And do we pray? Do we pray for them as they serve? Do we pray for their re-entry into society? For their families? That they will receive the help that they need to deal with all they've seen and done?

Ronie's novel does more than entertain. It makes you think. At least, it made me think. I am so looking forward to her next novel in the "Discarded Heroes" series, 'Digitalis'.

My thanks to my friends at Barbour Publishing for my copy. And my thanks to the men and women and their families who put it all on the line to keep us safe. I salute you. And I pray for you.

Happy Reading!

THANK YOU so much, Deena! I really appreciate your review and thoughts. NIGHTSHADE's mail goal is to open hearts/mind and dialogue about what's happening to our heroes. I'm so glad it did this for you! Many thanks and blessings!

I thought I had read this -- and then when I saw the second post with no review (totally missed the link) I decided I was losing my mind. This is the review that made me realize I am not putting enough energy into mine.
