Raising a Modern Day Princess by Pam Farrel and Doreen Hanna

This is the kind of book I wish had been written decades ago. But I'm glad it's around now, and hoping parents take its message to heart.

"Raising a Modern Day Princess" is about rites of passage for our daughters. Pam and Doreen share their research into rites of passage in other cultures; the quinceanera comes to mind immediately, as does the bat mitzvah.

But what do we have in our Christian culture?

Both authors talk about seeking the blessing from our parents, more specifically from our fathers, and how important that is. I think we've lost the meaning behind the blessing because we've focused so much on the New Testament and lost the Old Testament when it comes to our teaching.

But Pam and Doreen don't just point out the problem; they offer wonderful solutions! With step-by-step instruction, these two authors help us find our way back to blessing our daughters, raising them as modern day princesses to our King.

The ideas in the book run from the extravagant to the practical, and many of them are shared by people who've tried them. Interspersed throughout the book are testimonies from women who've either longed for or received the blessing.

And it's never too late. If you've never received your father's or parents' blessing, if you've never had a rite of passage as a daughter of the king, get a copy of this book and plan one with your family.

If like-minded believers came together to bless our daughters and raise them up as princesses of the King, what changes we'd see in our churches, in our communities, in our families...

So, I'm giving "Raising a Modern Day Princess" four out of five bookmarks, with a princess tiara as a charm. Thanks to my friends at Tyndale for my copy! To learn more, visit the website, Becoming a Modern Day Princess.

Happy Reading!
