Marriage is a lot of work. Lately, we've had four marriages in just three months at our small church--I think we may finally be out of couples who are engaged. One thing I love about the ceremonies my husband takes part in is this: he doesn't mince words about the work that goes into making a great marriage.
Part of marriage is conflict. "From Anger to Intimacy" gives practical and applicable guidelines on how to take the anger we all deal with and to turn it into learning and growing experiences, and how to not give over to anger's destructive tendencies.
Ted is open and honest about his anger issues, and I think many readers will be able to relate. Both authors talk about how to push someone's buttons and how volatile and destructive anger can be.
But Dr. Smalley has an intriguing take on anger. He believes it can be a training ground for us if we're willing to learn from it, to study it instead of stuff it or spew it.
But it takes time and training, which is what this book is all about. It's packed with ideas on how to apologize, channel anger into a more useful emotion, and also includes letters sent to Dr. Smalley and his responses to some real-life questions.
Also included are self-examination quizzes and check-ups to reveal any hidden anger issues we may have. Many of mine are carry overs from growing up in an emotional abusive home.
It's nice to know you're not alone, and not judged for struggling with something so dangerous as anger. Dr. Smalley and Ted Cunningham are non-judgmental and very helpful and encouraging in their book.
I'm giving "From Anger to Intimacy" four out of five bookmarks, with a time out chair as a charm. Sometimes a little time out for reflection can diffuse the most volatile situations...learned that in this book!
Happy Reading!
