GodStories by Andrew Wilson

I read a lot of books. That's no surprise. Basically, in my day, when one book closes, another one opens.

So I'm always excited when I stumble across a book that not only is a good read, but one that captivates me, and compels me to share it. I've found myself telling my husband more than one: "You've GOT to let me read you something!"

What's got me all excited? "GodStories" by Andrew Wilson. His book, compiled of over fifty stories taken from Scripture and purely about God, is fascinating, engaging, and full of wonder at the majesty of the One who loves us with an everlasting love.

Andrew's book is divided up into sections, each called acts. Act One is creation and the fall. Act Two covers Israel and her history. The third tackles the poets and the prophets, with four taking a closer look at Jesus and His rescue of us. Finally, Act Five closes with restoration and hope.

I want you to think about something with me. When's the last time you heard a message delivered by your pastor/minister about God? Not Jesus---God. When's the last time you heard a lesson or message taught from the Old Testament? When you think of church, the Bible, and salvation, who comes to mind first: Jesus or God?

I think we as a church have lost our knowledge of God. True, Jesus is God--so by knowing Him we know God. But to read of the Old Testament, of the prophets, the kings, the children of Israel...that is the God we serve...and He is SO MIGHTY, SO AWESOME, and SO LOVING...and SO HOLY.

Wow.

I couldn't put this book down, and I'm about to re-read it again. It's staying on my "keep forever" shelf, for a time when I need a fresh view of my God. If I were independently wealthy, I'd buy this book by the case and send them out randomly to pastors, churches, and believers wanting a fresh view of God.

This has all been in our Bibles forever. Andrew has the engaging voice of Max Lucado, the wisdom of John Piper, and the storytelling style of some of the best authors in today's Christian marketplace.

His story of the Old Testament tradition of the scapegoat and Jesus on the cross had me in tears and in awe anew at what my Savior, my God, did for me that day. Reading about the Ark of the Covenant left me mystified at why a Holy God would want to dwell with me.

Get this book. Share it with others. Families, this is perfect for family devotions. Home school families, get this book and incorporate it into your teaching times. Ministers, let this add some fire and depth to your preaching and teaching.

It's time we started thinking about God again, and just how magnificent and awesome and wonderful and holy He is again. If we as a church do that, revival can't help but break out.

So, I'm giving "GodStories" the Golden Bookmark for Engaging Writing and Excellence in Story (even though it's truth, it's written as story, which makes it more appealing), and voting it "Best Christian Non-fiction Study of 2009".

Andrew Wilson, I look forward to more from you one day. God bless you!

Happy Reading!
