It only takes three seconds to change a course of direction. By pausing and giving ourselves that minute amount of time, we can move from "whatever" to "whatever it takes".
The six predictable impulses that Dr. Parrott states we need to change are the impulses to:
...give up before trying.
...shun a challenge.
...settle for the status quo.
...shirk responsibility.
...do the mere minimum.
...avoid taking action.
Citing a multitude of examples, some famous and some practical, Les Parrott illustrates the power of the human mind to change the course of a life. Based on scientific evidence and psychological study, Dr. Parrott shows how ignoring out first impulse and giving room to our second impulse can improve our quality of life.
Again, I was disappointed in the lack of Scripture. But in looking at the back of the book jacket, I saw that this is not being billed as Christian living, but business/professional growth.
As such, this book is well written and well founded. However, it isn't merely the power of positive thinking that gets us going in the right direction, but the power of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer.
Still, Scripture does support much of what Dr. Parrott says. Paul stated much the same in Philippians 4:8, and Jesus himself said that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.
So the message is sound. The writing style is very readable. And I think this is a book we need, especially for this generation. I've read a lot of Dr. Parrott's writings, and this is one I'd highly recommend.
"3 Seconds" gets five out of five bookmarks from me...I thought about giving it four, then waited 3 seconds and decided it merited the full five:-)
Happy Reading!
